Co-occurrence and Bipolar Disorder
Substance abuse can co-occur with Bipolar Disorder
People with bipolar disorder often have substance abuse problems as well. Drug addiction and alcoholism are frequently associated with bipolar I disorder. Researchers have found that many factors can contribute to substance abuse, including self-medication of symptoms such as depression and anxiety; mood swings brought on or perpetuated by substance abuse; and risk factors that may affect the development of both bipolar disorder and substance use disorders. If substance abuse is present along with bipolar disorder, it is important that treatment for this problem should be included in the overall treatment plan.
Other illnesses that can occur along with Bipolar Disorder
Obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, panic disorder and social phobia are all commonly affect people with bipolar disorder. These anxiety disorders sometimes respond to the same treatments for bipolar disorder, otherwise, they must be treated separately.
Other mental disorders that can co-occur with bipolar disorder are eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa; attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder; autism spectrum disorders; sexual behaviour disorders and Tourette's disorder. General health problems that often occur along with bipolar disorder are obesity, migraine headaches, type II diabetes, thyroid illness and cardiovascular disease.
